Venice
A world-famous icon, with some of the characteristics that define the image of a magical destination for tourism: its canals, palaces and alleys enchant the visitor in all its aspects.
Venice is a unique and amazing city. Seductive for those aspects: nuances of the Romantic period and the architecture and for an artistic culture represented throughout its streets, works of art, churches, international festivals, its piazzas, museums and the typical Venetian gondolas, where one can become acquainted with the long, romantic canals that cross the city. This is good enough reason to extend one’s stay in Venice to be able to enjoy each on of its charms.
Culture and Art
The Biennale of Venice is an international art exhibition held, as its name indicates, every two years in this Italian city.
The Venice Movie Festival held at the end of August, in the Palazzo del Cinema of Venice is always a huge success, the venue specifically dedicated to the film festival, situated on the Venetian Lido island.
The most important award allocated by the Venice Movie Festival is the Golden Lion, the prize awarded by the panel of judges for the best movie of the festival. The jury also awards the Silver Lion or the Jury’s Grand Prix for the best movie director of all the participating films, as well as the VolpiCup, awarded to the best actor and actress and the Golden Lion for a lifetime career.
A large part of the great works of art in Venice are to be found in its churches and not only in its museums, as is the case of some of the paintings by the famous Tintoretto.
Venetian Gondolas and Canals
An innumerable amount of canals exist throughout Venice. Nevertheless, the best way of taking a trip through them is a ride in a gondola, permitting one to access certain parts of the city that, otherwise, would be impossible to reach on foot. The best-known canal in Venice is the Grand Canal, which divides the island in two, running through the island of Venice from the west to the Piazza S. Marco.
For centuries, the gondola has been the main form of transport for moving around these canals, although in recent years its use has become almost exclusively for tourism. The gondolas continue to be black, although various ceremonial gondolas still exist that are decorated in bright colours, a characteristic of the wealthy 16th century.
Shopping in Venice
The Masks, one of the symbols of Venice, are amongst the most typical souvenirs, the origins of which go back to the Carnival of Venice, as indeed is any decorative object in Murano crystal. The Murano factories can be visited and all kinds of object made of this beautiful glass can be purchased.
