This set of buildings includes nine churches built from the eleventh to the thirteenth centuries under the architectural tenets of the Lombard Romanesque style. Between them they represent a veritable historic testimony of the "birth" of Catalunya. Experts agree that they are the artistic reflection of a society rigidly divided into ecclesiastical and seigniorial classes. In fact the construction of the hermitages and churches was the initiative of the seigniors of Erill and the Bishop of Roda d´Isàbena.
Boí preserves a beautiful Romanesque hermitage dedicated to Sant Joan. Taüll contains the famous hermitages of Sant Climent and Santa Maria, both with impressive frescos and beautiful Romanesque workmanship throughout. As well as the aforementioned hermitages, mention must also be made of the Ermita de Santa Eulària in Erill la Vall, the Ermita de la Nativitat and Ermita de Sant Quirc in Durro, the Ermita Sant Feliu in Barruera, the Ermita de Santa Maria in Cardet and the Ermita de la Assumpció in Coll.
Quite apart from their architectural richness, the churches also boast notable specimens of mural painting and wooden sculptures, most of them currently kept in the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya in Barcelona. The most noteworthy is the Christ in his Majesty of Sant Climent de Taüll, which has become a veritable icon of Catalunya.
All these churches are open for visits every day, closing only on Christmas and New Year´s Day.
