The past, present and future of Caceres is inevitably linked to History. Warlike, religious, cultural. Visiting the province of Caceres is the same as enjoying a good book. Battles, legions, kings, religious people and faithful and strong inhabitants used to get stronger in times of adversity are the real stars in this land of legends.
The towns in the province, among which we can name Alcántara, Cabezuela del Valle, Coria, Cuacos de Yuste, Caceres, Galisteo, Garganta la Olla, Garrovillas, Gata, Granadilla, Guadalupe, Hervás, Hoyos, Pasarón de la Vera or Plasencia, today protect some of the most amazing monumental and artistic compounds that visitors should see. They should also see the gems of the Patrimony of people in Caceres: the old city Caceres, the cathedrals found in Coria and Plasencia, the Alcántara Bridge, the Guadalupe and Yuste Monasteries.
There is one reason why thousands of tourists visit the province of Caceres each year: the well-known Route of Conquerors. Due to the very rich historic past of this place, the city has been able to preserve and show the world the charm found in its spots provided by Arab and Roman people. The adventure of great historic characters can now be recreated all along the Route. Names that have contributed to history in Spain such Pizarro, Hernán Cortés or Núñez de Balboa can be found here. They were born in this area and are today considered to be some of the greatest conquerors of all times.
One of the most interesting starting points in the Conquerors Route is the old Caceres neighbourhood. This neighbourhood was once the starting point for some young Spaniards looking to conquer and would go from this place to the Americas. Setting the world on fire or die trying was part of the fate of these young conquerors. It is here where visitors will be able to see this beautiful compound declared as World Heritage.
During their visits, travellers will want to visit churches, palaces and courtyards that are very well maintained. One of the most important monuments in this area is the Veletas Palace which is now in the headquarters of the Archaeological Museum and that has preserves its Arab well.
The XIV and XVII centuries are very important in the city Trujillo. It was around that time when the city became relevant. By walking the streets, travellers can find the wonderful luxurious buildings that fill the old centre. Congresses, theatre representations, musical auditions and artistic exhibitions together with a gastronomy that has Arab influences, complement what this city has to offer.
Miajadas, towards Mérida, Escurial, Logrosán and Guadalupe are some of the main municipalities that complete this route. With ruins of walls and castles, travellers will get a glimpse of years of history. The de Guadalupe Monastery is the perfect place to end a trip. Here is where conquerors needed to get their license to be able to go to the Americas. This is what Columbus did and then renamed the monastery after one of the islands he discovered in the Antilles.
