Dianum Romana, so it was called in Roman days, is one of the Mediterranean ports linking the mainland to the Balearic Isles. A must-see sight here is the castle, of Arab origin. Its main attractions are the Sala del Consell (Council Hall) and Palau del Governador (Governor´s Palace), the latter now housing the Historical and ArchaeologicalMuseum. Visitors should not miss the view of the city and its beaches from the top of the castle walls. A walk through the old part of the town is also recommended to see the Iglesia de Santa María, the seventeenth-century parish church with fine Renaissance and Baroque altarpieces. Also worth a look is the main front of the City Hall, with two Roman tablets set in the walls. The port is another point of interest, as a ferry terminal, marina and, of course, as a fishing port; afterwards we might try some of the delicious fish dishes themselves in any of the local restaurants.
