Orgiva is considered to be the capital of the Alpujarra district of Granada, boasting many sites of interest. Particularly noteworthy are the towers of the eighteenth-century Renaissance church, built in imitation of Granada´s Nuestra Señora de las Angustias. The town was designated as a seigniory by the Catholic Monarchs themselves. Its important historical legacy features dozens of celebrated characters of the past. The palace of the Condes de Sástago is still to be found in the centre of the town while the Ermita de San Sebastián is a hermitage in the upper part of the town built over the remains of an Arab medieval castle.
Lanjarón has an outstanding Arab fort dating from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, presiding over the daily life of its traditional population of workers, farmers and craftsmen, today swelled by a good number of hoteliers, all noted for their cheery demeanour. But the true attractions of the town are the spa and its health-giving table water. Built in 1843 and remodelled in 1920, Lanjarón spa is famed for its therapeutic baths and their beneficial effects on rheumatism, osteoarthrosis or liver and kidney disorders.
