The centre of Montefrío was officially listed as an Artistic-Historic Ensemble in 1982. It is an exquisite white town of steep, higgledy-piggledy streets and alleyways. The town is crowned by an Arab fortress, with the town´s Gothic-Renaissance style church on the same spot. In the flat part of the town is the Plaza de España, where the Town Hall is a fine example of civil Granada architecture. Close by stands the eighteenth-century Iglesia de la Encarnación. This church, of neoclassical French style, has a curious circular shape. The Plaza del Convento contains the Baroque-style Iglesia de San Antonio with an image of the saint from which it takes its name.
