Pals Route

PalsThe walled enclosure takes in the well-preserved old part of Pals or the Barri del Pedró. The expertly-restored streets of Pals are full of fine details with arches and cobbled areas. Pride of place goes to the enormous, castle-like Gothic mansion known as Ca la Pruna, housing the UnderwaterArchaeologyMuseum. Within the walled area are four square twelfth-century towers, the tallest of them being the famous Torre de les Hores, a circular tower raised on solid rock in the highest part of Mont Aspre. Here there are several Visigoth burial sites.

Behind the tower there are splendid views of one of the most famous sights of the plain of Empordà: the Illes Medes, the islands that served as inspiration to Josep Plà, a Catalan writer who was a great connoisseur of his fatherland. Near the Torre de les Hores stands the Iglesia de Sant Pere with Romanesque remains and an elegant staircase. Apart from these sights the best idea is just to wander round these streets and soak up its medieval history, dropping into any of the excellent eating and drinking establishments.
