The wines of Ribeiro, marketed under a prestigious Designation of Origin scheme, have a unique taste and surprising aroma, both the reds and the whites. They are fruit of a time-honoured tradition dating right back to Roman times, although it was in the Middle Age when they began to forge a Europe-wide reputation. They then fell into a bit of a slump before recovering much of their fame and prestige.
The hub of the Ribeiro producing area is the town of Ribadavia, although all the towns and villages of the area weigh in with a sizeable contribution: Leiro, Beade, Arnoia or Castrelo do Miño, among many others. All in all they add up to a total of one hundred ?bodegas? or wineries blending craftsmanship with state-of-the-art technology.
In Ribadavia we recommend a visit to the winery of the Cooperativa Vinícola do Ribeiro. Other outstanding wineries are Viña Meín, lying next to the Monasterio de San Clodio, the Bodega Terencio and the Bodega de Coto de Gomariz in Leiro. In all of these wineries we can observe the wine production process and taste the fruits of it.
