Driving from the town of Ramales de la Victoria to Arredondo (or vice-versa) on the S-530 road, we cross the Valle de Ruesga, a valley that serves as a natural channel of communication between two other valleys: the Valle de Soba and the Valle del Asón.
Ramales de la Victoria, the scene of two battles between Liberals and Carlists, is a historic town of a modest architectural legacy. Its most important building is the Palacio de Revillagigedo, which belonged to the Virrey de México; the town centre also has interesting houses built by rich returning emigrants from the Americas.
Its environs are rich in caves with important rock paintings. The Valle de Ruesga has typical hamlets like Valle, Lastras, Ogarrio or Riba. At the end of the valley, before climbing up the higher stretch of the River Asón, we come to the lovely village of Arredondo, with a fine church of a neoclassical style. Only three kilometres away stands the rock hermitage of San Juan.
