Cardona has many important sights bearing witness to its past glories, such as the great castle itself, the gates of the walls, the arcaded square and the Iglesia de Sant Miguel, although the most visited site today is in fact the salt mine.

Mina Nieves de Cardona was one of the most important potassium salt mines in Europe right up to 1990. Today there is a whole complex revolving around this mineral, the Parc Cultural Muntanya de Sal (opening hours: weekdays 10.00 to 14.00 hours; weekends, 10.00 to 17.00 hours, with extension to 18.30 hours in August). Visitors are given the chance to carry out many activities and make many visits to a unique landscape made up by spectacular salt stalactites and stalagmites, fragile needles and tiny holes and columns of pristine whiteness.

On the last Sunday of October the streets and squares of the old part of the town fill with stalls selling one of autumn’s most highly appreciated mushrooms, the hygrophorus or wax cap genus, known in these parts as “llanega”, albeit topped up with other species. One of the most eagerly awaited moments is the Wax Cap Competition, in which prizes are awarded to the contenders who weigh in with most mushrooms or present the biggest or most original specimens. Cardona’s bars and restaurants also offer menus including various dishes made with this mushroom, such as butifarra (Catalan sausage), beef round and a pie of hygrophorous mushrooms with scampi.
