Formerly a frontier town between the warring Christians and Muslims, Totana
today plies a busy pottery trade and serves as the entrance gate to Murcia’s
main breathing space: the Sierra de Espuña.
Totana revolves around the
Plaza de la Constitución, with its Town Hall; very nearby stands the Iglesia de
Santiago, with a basilica layout and Baroque portal sprouting a tower with
fantastic gargoyles. On the other side of the street is a Baroque style fountain
built from white marble and black jasper, spouting 18 jets of water. Other
points of interest are the Casa de la Cultura, the cultural centre that was once
a prison, and the Capilla de la Milagrosa.
Taking the road towards Aledo
we come across the Ermita de Santa Eulalia. Aledo is a tiny medieval village
where we can still admire its castle and part of its walls. A little further on
we come to the Iglesia de Santa María la Real, which harbours an image of the
Virgen de la Aurora, a Virgin Mary figure carved by Salzillo.
